General
The Electronic Filing System paved the way for the world's first nation-wide paperless court system. It is comprehensive in its approach and revolutionised the conduct of civil litigation through its facilities for electronic filing, electronic extracts, electronic service of documents and the provision of electronic information services. The introduction of court hearings in an electronic environment also frees lawyers from the logistical burden of managing physical files (such as tracking, moving and storing them).

The Electronic Filing System application has two main modules. The Front-End system enables the law firms to file their court documents electronically from their office. The Service Bureau uses a similar Front-End system to file documents for law firms. The law firms' submissions are supported by the Workflow system, which is also used by the various staff in Judiciary for the internal work processes.

It offers the following four services to meet the evolving needs of civil litigation and litigants:

Electronic Filing Service
The Electronic Filing Service allows the law firms to file documents electronically to the Courts from their offices. The Service Bureau handles manual submissions from the law firms without the necessary computer systems.
Electronic Extract Service
The Electronic Extract Service allows the law firms to request for the extraction of copies of the cause papers from the Courts. This request can be made from the law firm office electronically or via the Service Bureau. The service is offered in two ways:
Search on the index of documents filed for a case
An on-line enquiry is available for law firms to browse the index of documents.

Extract electronic copies of the document
The system allows law firms to submit the extract request electronically to the Judiciary for approval. Once approval is granted, lawyers are able to browse and print the documents that are received electronically from the Court.

Electronic Service of Documents Facility
The Electronic Service of Documents Facility allows law firms to serve court documents on other law firms electronically over the Internet. Documents which are served using the Electronic Service of Documents Facility are deemed to be effectively served in compliance with Order 63A Rule 12 of the Rules of Court. A certificate of service is automatically generated by the system. This certificate can be filed in court in lieu of the affidavit of service as evidence of service.

The "One click File-n-Serve" feature allows law firms to file documents with the Courts and serve the same documents on the other parties in the action with just one click of the mouse button. This reduces the number of steps which law firms were previously required to undertake in order to file and serve documents.

The service facility is not only more convenient for the lawyers but also leads to savings in manpower costs as dispatch clerks need not be hired to go from place to place to serve court documents personally.

Electronic Information Service
The Electronic Information Service allows law firms to perform online search queries on case information, including all the existing LawNet search services, directly from their office or via the Service Bureau.
